Disappointing News Today

Some disappointing news today from the Fantasy Camp Front. Carl Yastrzemski won’t be joining campers at all during camp due to health concerns.

I am sure every camper is disappointed in missing the chance to meet the legend, but we all extend out a heartfelt wish that his health improves.

10 days and counting!!

Preparation continues

So we had quite the snowstorm up here today, the snow was light and fluffy, so the shoveling was easy, but it made working out tough.

I got a little ingenuity came through, I took some old couch cushions and put them against the back wall in my garage on top of my work table, and then threw against it. I was going to throw against the wall itself, but with my luck I would end up cracking the foundation of my house, and that’s the last thing I want to happen.

I threw twice today for about 15 minutes each time.

Arm feels good

We got the final info!

Well, today the final information packet arrived via Fed-Ex.

I now have my roommate’s name, and it is my buddy Joe who I am going to camp with, so it will be nice to not have to share a room with a complete stranger.

Got the full schedule with all the coaches and managers as well. I will admit I do have a couple teams I hope to be on, my 3 top choices are all in the Yastrzemski Division.

Valentin’s Vikings; Manager – John Valentin; Coach – Luis Tiant
Lee’s Lefties; Manager – Bill Lee; Coaches – Felix Maldonando/Mike Stanley
Treuel’s Trolls; Manager – Ralph Treuel; Coach – Oil Can Boyd

Why those you ask? Well, they all have a coach or manager who I think is probably going to be a really really interesting person, even without the baseball aspect of it, just as a human being.

I am a little bit disappointed with some of the rules that were listed for the week. The top of which are the no bunting, no stealing, 7 inning games and only 6 runs an inning rule. I guess I kind of understand them all, but it makes me feel like I am back playing T ball again.

I leave in 16 days… a day earlier than most other guys… I am excited!

Better Late Than Never!

So I started today what I should have started a month or 2 ago, my throwing practice to make sure I don’t suffer from dead arm, horrible aim, or get an injury while down at camp.

Living in New England lends a problem to the normal course of being able to throw and practice in the months leading up to camp in February.

Cold Weather
Short Daylight
Snowy/Bad Weather

All these things make it pretty tough to take care of proper preparation for the week down at camp. I have been unable to find anyone to play catch with, and have nowhere at home that makes a productive place to even play catch with myself, especially since it is way too dark before I go to work and when I get home from work.

My plan is now to use my lunch hour to throw for 10-15 minutes or so against the side of the building, I figure I can use this to build up some arm strength along with some reflexes if I move close enough to the wall while throwing to help work on my glove work at the same time.

After my first 10 minute session, I had forgotten how much of a work out just throwing the ball can be, I am tired and want a nap right now… Hmmm… I could crawl under the desk and no one would notice… ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Congratulations to #14

Earlier today a great bit of news was released to the world by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

James Edward Rice, #14 on the Boston Red Sox for the entirely of his 16 seasons in Major League baseball was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

This was Jim’s final year of standard eligibility, if he had not been voted in with the 76.4% vote he received, then his only option to get into the Hall of Fame would have been via the Veterans Committee or buying a ticket at the door.

Also elected this year were Ricky Henderson(94.8%), and Joe Gordan(Veteran’s Committee).

I am happy to see that one of the great Red Sox players from the past has finally been recognized the way he was meant to be for his play over the years. I also look forward to meeting and congratulating him in person while at camp in February.

I also hope to be able to get a photo of me with both Jim and Yaz.

T-Minus 20 Days

Well, here is my first post for the blog. I have had a few blogs in the past but I never seem to be able to keep up with them for very long because the interest in them just sort of wains and I give up on it.

When did all this start? I would have to say when I was a kid and I heard about how you could go play with the Pros, I wanted to go then and there and show em how good I was, I never did though.

I always say I bleed red for a reason, I am a Red Sox fan to the very core. What used to be a heart wrenching experience as a child, turned to gut wrenching as a young adult, and turned into unfettered rapture as an adult.

I have become friend’s with Joe, a fellow Red Sox fan to the core who lives out in San Francisco. He mentioned going to camp in 2007 for the 2008 year, so I told him to put it off for a year until I was 30 and then we could both go for the experience together.

Well, I am 30 and early last spring we both sent in our deposits and this journey was started.

In 19 days I board a plane to head down to Fort Myer’s Florida to the Red Sox Spring Training Facility at City of Palms Park where I will spend a week with other Red Sox fans as we play on the same fields as the team we cheer for all year long.

Excitment is an understatement for how I feel leading up to this, but I am also nervous at the same time.

This will be a blog that will chronicle my experience before, during and after in tandem with my Flickr Account and my Twitter Account.

Bye Bye Rosie

No, this is not about a girl…

It is about Rosevelt(Rosie) Colvin who was a linebacker for the Patriots, he was cut after the Super Bowl since he had missed the last 4 or 5 games and the playoffs with an injury.

I had kind of hoped that he would be back this season, but alas, it was not to be, so he has gone and signed with the Texans.

I think he will be a pretty good pairing with Mario Williams down there, hopefully the Texans can get some offense together for what is potentially a really good defense.

I kinda want the season to start already!!

In other news, David Ortiz had his cast removed today, almost no pain and he has been cleared to start strength and range of motion exercises in his rehab. Dice-K also pitched in a PawSox game today, and will likely be starting the game on Saturday at Fenway Park.

It is now ok for me to criticize it…

Not only is it one of the fucking ugliest cars out there, I now have the ability and qualifications to say that a Prius fucking sucks to drive!

Horribly uncomfortable, awkward, and absolute crap for sight lines.

Power is iffy at times and I really dislike how it doesn’t slow you down when you take your foot off the gas since the electric part takes over to keep the car moving more than you would in a normal car.

Just another car to add to the list with minivan and HHR on my no drive list with Avis.

Well About Freakin Time!!

Let us bid farewell to Brett Favre, he has now officially retired.

No more talk about “the streak” no more talk about the battling veteran QB, no more talk about the records he is setting, no more putting his own glory and desire above and beyond those of the team.

Great career, some great things, but at least he was able to go out with some dignity with a halfway decent season this past year.

***UPDATE: Unfortunately this post turned out not to be true… even now, in 2010, Favre is still playing and will likely play again for the Vikings this year***

Finz

So last night, I was on the way home with my GF who helped me and my siblings take a picture together to give to my mom as a mother’s day gift, and then picking up a new rug for the living room at Building 19 3/4 – yes, it was actually a spur of the moment stop and impulse buy, but it looks really good in the living room, I will post a picture in another blog or in my pictures at some point.

So prior to that stop we were cruising homeward bound and we were hungry, so we were trying to figure out where to go…

First, we ruled out fast food and pizza places for the obvious reason, then we ruled out a chain because that just wasn’t worth it and she wasn’t in the mood for chinese or japanese etc, so those were ruled out, however we had one last resort option if we couldn’t find someplace, and that was Chipotle, which is both a chain and sorta fast food, but it gets an exemption, tough to explain but it is just different so it gets one.

So we were cruising up RT 1 and seeing what is around and we finally get to RT1/128/95 and realize we have 2 options, Joe’s American Bar and Grill(technically a chain but not a big one so it is exempt) or Finz which is a semi local seafood sorta chain place, there are more than one of them anyway.

So we decide on Finz and make our way over there, it was only about 5:30 so we were pretty much still in old person time which is fine by me since it meant easy to get in and get a table and not too much noise, and yes, there were many an old person in there at the time.

I started off with a sour apple martini which was really good, we got some fresh rolls which were really warm and just plain awesome. Then we had the crispy calamari for an appetizer. WOW, that was the most tender and well made calamari I have ever had, it was crisp on the outside with a light flaky batter which had flavor but not so much as to overwhelm the flavor of the calamari, and the inside was soft and the furthest thing from rubbery you can imagine, it was perfectly cooked. The marinara and garlic butter dipping sauces were great compliments to it as well.

I chose the pan seared scallops with a cider reduction, with bacon whipped potatoes on the side. I was supposed to get a roasted corn and mushroom ragout, but I swapped it out for the much simpler asparagus spears. This dish was FANTASTIC, the scallops were fresh, perfectly cooked and the cider reduction complimented it perfectly. The potatoes were great and while there were no chunks of bacon, you could really taste the bacon in them, I am guessing they had bacon fat added to them for the flavor.

She had the pan seared shrimp wrapped in prosciutto, with pesto Israeli cous cous, and those were delicious as well, nicely cooked and the flavors mixed really well together.

THEN, we had dessert too to make it a perfectly decadent night, we got a square of chocolate marshmallow cheesecake which was absolutely divine, the layer of fudge-like chocolate on the top could have been sliced to about half thickness since it was a bit over powering, but man, even with that, the marshmallow flavored cheesecake center with the graham cracker crust was to die for, and glad we split it because I never would have been able to eat it myself, just too big.

I have eaten up at the one in Salem before, and I know at least one of you has as well, although you may just drink there, not sure exactly. While this one is not on the ocean, the atmosphere is great and the food just plain awesome. Definitely will be back at some point, but not too often since it can be a bit pricey, but definitely worth it if you want a nice, quiet, quality meal to treat yourself with your $$.
